How to Use Google My Maps and Embed Google Maps on Your Website

Introduction to Google My Maps

Google My Maps is an incredibly versatile tool that allows you to create custom maps tailored to your needs. Whether you want to list your favourite restaurants, showcase your business locations, or illustrate the areas you cover, Google My Maps has you covered. In this blog, I’ll walk you through the process of creating a map, adding markers, styling them, and, importantly, how to embed Google Maps into your website in a responsive way.

Creating Your First Map

To get started, head over to Google My Maps. Click on "Create a New Map" to begin. You’ll see an untitled map with an untitled layer. This is your blank canvas!

Think about the purpose of your map. Are you showcasing places you’ve visited, or perhaps the locations of your businesses? For this example, let’s say we want to create a map to show the addresses of customers we’ve serviced.

Importing Data into Your Map

To add locations to your map, you can either input them manually or import them from a spreadsheet. For simplicity, I’ve created a basic spreadsheet with one column for addresses and another for names.

Back in Google My Maps, select the "Import" function. You can choose to upload your spreadsheet from your device, Google Drive, or Google Maps. For our case, we’ll select the addresses column for positioning and the names column for the markers' titles.

Customizing Your Map

Once your data is imported, you’ll see the locations appear on your map. However, the default blue icons can blend in with other map elements. To differentiate your markers, click on the paint bucket icon to change their colour. For instance, turning them red can make them stand out more.

You can also click on each marker to edit it. Add descriptions, images, and other relevant information to make your map more informative and visually appealing.

Styling Your Markers

In addition to changing colours, you can customize the icons of your markers. Click on the marker, select the paint bucket icon, and choose from various icons to represent different types of locations. This helps users quickly identify what each marker represents.

For example, if you’re marking restaurants, you might want to use a fork and knife icon. If you’re marking service areas, a truck icon could be fitting.

Adding Images and Descriptions

Enhance your markers by adding images or videos. When you click on a marker, you’ll see an option to add an image. You can upload images directly from your device or search Google Images to find something relevant.

Including visuals not only makes your map more engaging but also provides context for the locations you’re marking.

Sharing Your Map

Once you’re satisfied with your map, it’s time to share it. Click on the "Share" button. Here, you can choose to make your map public or share it with specific people. If you want anyone with the link to view it, select the appropriate option.

Embedding Google Maps on Your Website

Now that your map is ready, let’s embed it on your website. This is a crucial step for making your map accessible to visitors. To do this, look for the three dots in the top right corner and select "Embed on my site."

This will generate an iframe code. However, to ensure your map is responsive, copy that code and navigate to embed responsively.com. Paste your iframe code into the provided field and click "Embed." Copy the new code generated, which will maintain the aspect ratio on different devices.

Using Shapes and Lines on Your Map

Besides markers, Google My Maps allows you to add lines and shapes to illustrate areas you cover. Click on the "Draw a line" option to outline specific regions. For instance, if you cover certain neighbourhoods, drawing a shape around them can visually represent your service area.

These visual elements can enhance the understanding of your map and provide valuable context to viewers.

Final Touches and Tips

Before finalizing your map, double-check all markers and information for accuracy. Consider the following:

  • Make sure all addresses are correct and pinpointed accurately.
  • Use distinct colours and icons for different categories of places.
  • Test the embedded map on your website to ensure it looks good on all devices.

With these final touches, your Google My Maps project will be a valuable resource for anyone visiting your website.

Conclusion

Google My Maps is a powerful tool that can help you create personalized maps for various purposes. Whether you’re showcasing your business locations or sharing your favourite spots, the ability to embed Google Maps on your website makes it even more useful. Remember to keep your maps updated and engaging to provide the best experience for your viewers. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below!
